Plunge Pools in Atlanta, GA

Think your outdoor space is too small for a pool? Think again! Plunge pools are a great solution for those who want to enjoy a dip, warm soak, or cold plunge without the space and cost of a larger pool. These compact wonders pack a punch, providing a refreshing retreat for cooling off, relaxation, and even exercise.

We have the experience, knowledge, and resources to design and build the perfect plunge! Read on to explore everything you need to know about plunge pools, from their sizes and benefits to cost factors and variations.

What is a plunge pool?

At its core, a plunge pool is a small, shallow pool typically designed for relaxation, cooling off, and hydrotherapy. Unlike traditional swimming pools, plunge pools are compact and often feature a deep, narrow profile that allows for easy installation in smaller spaces. Despite their smaller dimensions, plunge pools offer a refreshing respite and can be customized with various features for added functionality.

How big is a plunge pool?

While generally the smaller size, plunge pools come in a range of dimensions to suit different spaces and needs. On the smaller end of the spectrum, plunge pools can measure as compact as 8 feet long by 6 feet wide and only a few feet deep, making them ideal for urban homes or compact yards where space is at a premium. On the larger end, plunge pools can stretch up to 20 feet in length and 10 feet in width (with deeper depths), offering ample room for swimming, lounging, and relaxation.

Plunge pool benefits

Plunge pools are popular thanks to their versatility and a variety of functional advantages:

  • They’re ideal for smaller spaces
Plunge pools are tailor-made for smaller urban spaces or compact yards. Their compact size allows homeowners to enjoy the luxury of a pool without sacrificing valuable outdoor space.
  • They’re great warm or cold
Like a normal-sized pool, plunge pools can be heated or left cool. A heated plunge pool offers the versatility of providing a cool respite during hot summer months, or a warm soak in cooler weather.
  • They offer versatile functionality
Depending on the size, shape, and features of your plunge pool, they can have a variety of functions. A small and shallow plunge pool with water features offers a beautiful aesthetic and a relaxing lounge space; a deeper, longer plunge pool can allow for exercise and lap swimming; a small but deep plunge pool can be great for cold or heat therapy.
  • They add value
Just as regular pools can add value to your home, so can a plunge pool! Waterfalls, lighting, and seating options—plus luxurious designs and tile finishes—can up the ante even more.

Restrictions of a plunge pool

Plunge pools offer numerous benefits, but they might not be for everyone due to some key restrictions:

  • They won’t work for every activity
For homeowners and families that want a pool primarily for recreation—like games, and swimming—plunge pools might not be large enough. And while plunge pools can be slightly deeper (up to 7 feet) they won’t be deep enough for diving or other activities that require more depth.
  • They may not be ideal for every backyard space
For larger yards, plunge pools might not fit the space well, due to their small size. They typically work better in smaller yards where they are proportional to other outdoor elements and designs.
  • They’re still an investment
While the construction and maintenance costs of a plunge pool will be slightly lower than those of a normal-sized pool, you’ll still need to invest in permitting, land prep, excavation, etc. Some people feel that since they’re making that investment, they’d prefer to go larger and get more use from their pool.

Can plunge pools be heated?

Yes! Like a normal-sized pool, plunge pools can be heated to any temperature you would like. Keep in mind that if you want the option to heat your plunge pool, you’ll need to talk to your pool builder ahead of time; they will have to prepare accordingly by tapping into gas lines or electricity to allow for this functionality. Also, keep in mind that heating your plunge pool will add to the overall lifetime costs. On the other hand, heating a smaller plunge pool is much more cost-efficient than heating a larger pool.

What’s the difference between a spool and a plunge pool?

The names spool and plunge pool can sometimes be used interchangeably, depending on the functionality. Spools typically feature a combination of spa and pool features, such as heated water jets and seating areas. Plunge pools can be built to include these features; however, the name “plunge pool” typically refers to pools that are used primarily for cooling off and relaxation. Both tend to be smaller in size and depth.

What’s the difference between a plunge pool and a hot tub?

As mentioned, plunge pools can be heated. However, there are some key differences between hot tubs and plunge pools. Hot tubs tend to be shallow with seating around the entire perimeter and with jets to add to the heat therapy functionality. Plunge pools tend to be slightly deeper, with less seating and don’t usually feature jets. If you want a plunge pool that doubles as a pool and hot tub, talk to your builder about the necessary features.

Different types of plunge pools

Like regular pools, plunge pools come in a variety of types. Here are the three basic categories:

  1. Fiberglass plunge pools

Durable and low-maintenance, fiberglass plunge pools are pre-fabricated and easy to install. They come in a range of sizes and shapes, with smooth, non-porous surfaces that resist algae growth and staining:

    • Fiberglass plunge pools offer quick installation because they are prefabricated.
    • Fiberglass pools are low-maintenance, thanks to their smooth, non-porous surface that resists algae growth and staining.
    • Fiberglass is a durable material that can withstand harsh weather conditions and is resistant to cracks and damage.
    • Fiberglass plunge pools come in standard shapes and sizes, but customization options are limited.
    • Fiberglass pools may include transportation costs because they are manufactured offsite.
  2. Concrete plunge pools

Customizable and durable, concrete plunge pools offer endless design possibilities. They can be tailored to fit any space and feature great design options that can elevate the aesthetic.

    • Concrete plunge pools offer virtually limitless customization options, including beautiful tile designs, modern aggregate finishes, unique shapes and layouts, and more.
    • Concrete is durable and can withstand heavy use; it’s also resistant to cracks and damage. With proper maintenance, a well-built concrete plunge pool can last for decades.
    • Concrete pools require a longer installation process compared to fiberglass or vinyl pools and can be more costly as a result. Customization and high-end finishes can add to this extra cost.
    • Generally, concrete pools require more regular maintenance than fiberglass, including resurfacing and sealing.
  3. Vinyl plunge pools

Vinyl plunge pools are constructed with flexible vinyl liners that conform to any shape or size. While not as durable as fiberglass or concrete, vinyl plunge pools offer a cost-effective option for homeowners on a budget.

    • Vinyl plunge pools are generally more affordable upfront compared to fiberglass or concrete pools, making them a budget-friendly option for homeowners.
    • Vinyl pools can be installed relatively quickly compared to concrete pools.
    • Vinyl liners provide a smooth surface that is comfortable to the touch and resists algae growth and staining.
    • Vinyl liners typically need replacement every 10-15 years, which can be costly and time-consuming.
    • Vinyl liners are more susceptible to punctures and tears from sharp objects, such as tree branches or pool toys.
    • Vinyl pools do not offer as much customization as concrete pools in terms of shape, size, and design features.

How much does a plunge pool cost?

Generally, plunge pools will cost less to build and maintain than larger pools. Several factors can influence the final cost of a plunge pool, including:

  • Pool type

As mentioned above, some plunge pool types are more cost-effective to construct (vinyl and fiberglass) while others are more expensive (concrete). Pool type influences labor as well as material costs.

  • Size and dimensions

Larger plunge pools will naturally cost more to install due to increased materials and labor costs. Conversely, smaller plunge pools will be slightly cheaper to construct and for maintenance, heating, etc.

  • Materials and finishes

The choice of materials and finishes—tile, pebble, aggregate or plaster, for instance—will also affect the cost of a plunge pool. Tile and other high-end finishes or custom features will add to the overall expense.

  • Additional features

Water features, lighting, heating, and other optional features will add to the cost of a plunge pool but can enhance comfort, convenience, and aesthetics.

  • Location and geography

The price of your plunge pool will also depend on location details—including the makeup of the land and property and local labor costs.
